Southern cassowary

A southern cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) near Licuala
While it would have been nicer to find a cassowary in the forest, it was still a nice treat to find one wandering along the side of the Tully-Mission Beach Road not far from Licuala. I had made an afternoon dash to Mission Beach to have a peek at how the rainforest is regenerating after Cyclone Yasi.

Growth at low levels is nice and thick, as would be expected with the extra light coming in after Yasi took the canopy off most of the forest. I hate to think how many cyclone-free wet seasons it will take until the area returns to the pre-Cyclone Larry (2006) and Yasi (2011) state I remember it in after I moved up in 2000.
