Cairns Post Letters from the Wingnuts #9 (Short and stupid)

Today saw a Cairns Post Letters to the Editor page that was fairly sensible, which was a bit of a relief after seeing the septic tank of a Letters page on Thursday to which I must now begin to turn. I think I'll start with the easiest one.

In the Short and Sharp section came this remarkable brain fart from Garry O'Brien of Mt Sheridan:
It is reported that 2000 of the world's leading scientists will attend the Coral Symposium and deliver a statement on climate change and coral reefs, calling on governments to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Is it possible one of these scientists will state that carbon dioxide is not a pollutant?
Yes, it is possible, just very unlikely because it would be completely and utterly wrong. Carbon dioxide is a pollutant and marine scientists, many of whom study ocean acidification due to carbon dioxide emissions, are more aware of this than many types of scientist. Indeed one of the mini-symposia in the International Coral Reef Symposium 2012 is on ocean acidification.

I think it is safe to assume that Mr O'Brien is not as stupid as his argument would suggest. Let us further assume he is of at least average intelligence or greater. What is it in his brain that causes such a failure of thinking? What is the reflexive mental action that shuts down his critical thinking ability? These are the questions he should be asking.

The Symposium's Consensus Statement can be found here.
