Unidentified hoverfly (possibly Episyrphus sp.)
It was a cool and grey day in Cairns today, and after a significant sleep in I had breakfast at the Trinity Beach Bar and Grill, then wandered along the beach with my camera. The low light made a flash mandatory, especially in the shadows. Some movement caught my eye, and then I saw what I thought was a small insect on a dying purple flower, Closer examination revealed it to be a hoverfly on a small branch. In the low light, the wings were glistening purple, but this didn't come out in the bright light of the flash.

An attempt at a solid identification has failed so far. Nothing I can find has quite the same pattern. E. viridareus comes close, but I don't think that's it.
