Black-headed skimmer

Crocothemis nigrifrons male
A male black-headed skimmer (Crocothemis nigrifrons) about to take off

I was trying to catch a photo of this dragonfly as it took off, but despite shots one third of a second apart, the next photo was just of the branch. I believe this individual is a fairly immature male as the blue colouring spreads over more of the body as they age. The species is also sometimes confusingly known as the blue scarlet. The powder blue colour of the male is atypical for the genus, which usually has red males (hence "scarlet").
